The Preakness Stakes post time -- the time the race is scheduled to begin -- is 6:20 p.m.  About 40 minutes before post, not long before horses and riders began heading to their gates, Pimlico officials said the tack's conditions were fast and firm....

How many sporting events have you actually attended in the last 12 months?
How many sporting events have you actually attended in the last 12 months? Because we are not in the same room (at least I hope not because I'm not properly dressed for company,) I cannot be sure of your answer. But I am guessing that the majority would...

  11. Rain at Pimlico isn't a welcome sight for Preakness jockeys

Among the concerns for jockeys at the Preakness today is the weather.
    The Baltimore Sun
Among the concerns for jockeys at the Preakness today is the weather. Shortly before rain began to fall minutes ago, jockeys were watching the skies. Some know all too well that their horses don’t respond to sloppy tracks, and they were holding...

BALTIMORE — Horse racing's Preakness is a place of history and a bubble of hope.
BALTIMORE — Horse racing's Preakness is a place of history and a bubble of hope. If you come here with a Kentucky Derby victory under your belt, as trainer Shug McGaughey and Orb have, you have little time to appreciate that history. You are...

  19. History of black jockeys is long, if not recent

Thanks for <a href="http://bio.tribune.com/MikeKlingaman">Mike Klingaman</a>'s article, which focused on Kevin Krigger and his aspirations to break the over 100-year absence of African American jockey winners at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes ("With the weight of racing history," May 16). One quibble: The article gives the impression that African American jockeys emerged during Reconstruction, when as Mr. Klingaman writes "the sport was young, agrarian and accepting of former slaves and their kin who rode the animals they'd once cared for."

Hall of Famers D. Wayne Lukas and Bob Baffert have a combined 10 victories in the Preakness Stakes, equally split at five apiece. Having been there and seen everything in the 1 3/16-mile classic, there is naturally more credence to their opinions even...

  23. Rosario the right jockey at the right time for Derby winner Orb

    The Lexington Herald-Leader
He speaks in quiet tones and frequently punctuates his sentences with a bit of laughter. And when one tries to get Joel Rosario to elaborate on his success, the already shy jockey often ends up at a loss for words. "I don't know, it's hard for me to...
