1. Cruise ships feature a variety of dining options

Variety is definitely the spice of life aboard today’s cruise ships (a far cry from the dining situation in the 1970s when Jeraldine Saunders wrote her book, The Love Boats, and the subsequent movies and television series The Love Boat based upon her work came along and were credited with popularizing cruising). Back then, there was typically only one restaurant for dinner onboard –bored or not, take it or leave it!). Now ships have multiple restaurants offering different menus and ambiance to suit different moods and tastes. Here are dining offerings on four ships, in four categories (moderate, premium, upper-premium and ultra-luxury) that feature at least half dozen eateries onboard (and in one case, two dozen) so if passengers so wish, they can dine at a different venue every evening of a seven-night cruise (with one of the nights being room service dinner –24-hour room service is available on all these ships on a complimentary basis).

  3. Food is part of joy of discovering China's Nanjing

Just as tourists to Italy may choose Rome or Florence as their first-time destination, many pick Beijing or Shanghai for their inaugural visit to China. But my first trip to the People's Republic of China led me to discover Nanjing.

  5. A return to New Orleans and its delicious, affordable cuisine

NEW ORLEANS - On Bourbon Street, stout men in narrow-brimmed hats strummed loud music from bars on opposite sides of the street, battling for the attention of passersby. Neatly dressed touts fanned out from strip-club doors, urging men to step within, smiling with well-oiled cheer. I snapped a photo of a woman in one doorway who appeared to be clad in little more below the waist than a strategically placed patch, and as I walked on, a young man followed me, calling out, "Hey, I saw you taking the picture. You want to hook up with any of them?"

  7. The Frugal Traveler: Where to find great grub for less

With food costs playing a large role in vacation budgets, it pays to know where you can get great grub for less. Portugal for example, is currently the cheapest place to eat out in Europe, according to a recent price survey. Specifically, in the Algarve region, a succulent seafood soup can ring in at only 3 euros. This same area also sees dish of the day offerings averaging 6 euros, and tourist menu prices for an appetizer or soup, main dish, drink, dessert and coffee can be frequently be found for approximately 10 euros. Here are a handful of other frugal food finds for travelers.

LAS VEGAS — Deciding where to dine in Las Vegas is a little like determining where to gamble. Or shop, for that matter. The choices are seemingly limitless.
