  3. Cruise Port Spotlight: Boston

A frequent stop and embarkation port on New England/Canada and Bermuda voyages as well as starting point of some seasonal Caribbean cruises and an occasional stop on trans-Atlantic voyages, Boston has seen a dramatic increase in cruise business in recent years. The city welcomed its one-millionth cruise passenger in 2011 and launched an $11 million renovation to the Black Falcon Cruise Terminal including a new third floor with 60,000-square feet of space for passenger processing at Cruiseport Boston in 2010. Passenger-friendly Cruiseport Boston is only a couple of miles from the city’s downtown with plentiful taxis when ships are in port and a trolley shuttle that links the waterfront to such must-sees as the colonial-style Faneuil Hall Marketplace on 1, Faneuil Hall Square, Quincy Market, a historic building on 4, South Market Street with great shops and peddler carts galore; the New England Aquarium with more than 70 exhibits with aquatic animals from around the world at Central Wharf, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market; and Copley Square in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood with diverse architectural styles including such buildings as Boston’s Trinity Church, the Boston Public Library and the John Hancock buildings including a tower by noted Chinese architect I.M. Pei. Back Bay also boasts such landmarks as the Boston Public Garden; Boston Common, America’s oldest public park; and the Cheers Pub, “where everybody knows your name.”

  5. Cruise Port Spotlight: Lisbon, Portugal

Most cruise ships passengers make sure they are out on deck for the arrival of their ship into Lisbon. Its setting is beautiful: it is the only European capital city on the Atlantic Ocean and sits on the wide Tagus River. As they navigate the river, many of the Portuguese capital’s must-sees are visible including the elaborate limestone Belem Tower, standing tall on the river’s bank, erected as a fort in the 16th century; and the limestone Monument to the Discoveries, depicting a group of navigators and monarchs on the deck of a sailing ship –men who figured prominently in Portugal’s exploits in exploration including Ferdinand Magellan, Vasco da Gama and Prince Henry the Navigator.

  13. Trans-Atlantic repositioning cruises offer value this spring

After their ships have wintered in the Caribbean, many cruise lines deploy some of them to Europe where they spend the summer sailing in the Mediterranean, the Aegean and the Baltic. These cruises present a fine opportunity as the repositioning voyages generally visit some off-the-beaten-path ports, offer themed perks such as wine and food festivals, and have attractive pricing (sometimes, in addition to special fares, they feature free or discounted air --ask before you book). Another advantage, since the ships cross slowly it is easier to acclimate to European time zones. A couple of caveats, though: these voyages are longer than the usual seven-night runs and feature a number of days at sea. But if passengers have the time, if they relish the thought of crossing an ocean by ship, and if they enjoy lazy days of blue water sailing, the repositioning cruises cannot be beat. And perhaps the biggest bonus of all: many of these voyages sail from Florida and the East Coast so little or no flying is needed on the way to Europe.

  15. Cruise ships feature a variety of dining options

Variety is definitely the spice of life aboard today&rsquo;s cruise ships (a far cry from the dining situation in the 1970s when Jeraldine Saunders wrote her book, <em>The Love Boats</em>, and the subsequent movies and television series&nbsp; <em>The Love Boat </em>based upon her work came along and were credited with popularizing cruising). Back then, there was typically only one restaurant for dinner onboard &ndash;bored or not, take it or leave it!). Now ships have multiple restaurants offering different menus and ambiance to suit different moods and tastes. Here are dining offerings on four ships, in four categories (moderate, premium, upper-premium and ultra-luxury) that feature at least half dozen eateries onboard (and in one case, two dozen) so if passengers so wish, they can dine at a different venue every evening of a seven-night cruise (with one of the nights being room service dinner &ndash;24-hour room service is available on all these ships on a complimentary basis).

  19. Cruise Port Spotlight: Sydney, Australia

Sydney, Australia, starting and ending point of many cruises and a popular port of call on world cruises and other extended voyages, invariably makes the lists of the world&rsquo;s most scenic harbors &ndash;along with the likes of Rio de Janeiro. Brazil, and Hong Kong, China. Without a doubt, one of the planet&rsquo;s best natural harbors, Sydney Harbor &ndash;its official name is Port Jackson&mdash;has world-famous sights as the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Most cruise ship passengers make it a point to be up on deck for their ship&rsquo;s arrival in Sydney to take in its landscapes with modern skyscrapers and its seascapes with ferryboats and sailboats in the harbor.

  21. Cruise Port Spotlight: Barcelona, Spain

Sitting pretty along the shores of the Mediterranean as an old Spanish song proclaims (<em><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Que bonita es Barcelona, tierra del Mediterraneo</span></em>), Barcelona, the capital of the Catalonia region of Spain, is one of the Iberian peninsula&rsquo;s top cities. A port of call, embarkation/disembarkation port on Mediterranean cruises, and beginning or ending point of many Trans-Atlantic repositioning cruises to and from Fort Lauderdale and other U.S. ports, Barcelona came into the spotlight during the 1992 Olympics that it hosted. It has much to offer cruise passengers.

  23. Cruise Port Spotlight: Singapore

A strict, independent city-state of five million that inhabit just 224 square miles, Singapore is known for its many rules and stiff penalties regarding littering, eating, drinking and smoking in public areas (the infamous ban on chewing gum in public areas has been relaxed, but you still cannot litter with the used gum). This exotic city-state has nonetheless much to offer travelers.
