  3. Trans-Atlantic repositioning cruises offer value this spring

After their ships have wintered in the Caribbean, many cruise lines deploy some of them to Europe where they spend the summer sailing in the Mediterranean, the Aegean and the Baltic. These cruises present a fine opportunity as the repositioning voyages generally visit some off-the-beaten-path ports, offer themed perks such as wine and food festivals, and have attractive pricing (sometimes, in addition to special fares, they feature free or discounted air --ask before you book). Another advantage, since the ships cross slowly it is easier to acclimate to European time zones. A couple of caveats, though: these voyages are longer than the usual seven-night runs and feature a number of days at sea. But if passengers have the time, if they relish the thought of crossing an ocean by ship, and if they enjoy lazy days of blue water sailing, the repositioning cruises cannot be beat. And perhaps the biggest bonus of all: many of these voyages sail from Florida and the East Coast so little or no flying is needed on the way to Europe.

  5. Cruise Port Spotlight: Barcelona, Spain

Sitting pretty along the shores of the Mediterranean as an old Spanish song proclaims (<em><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Que bonita es Barcelona, tierra del Mediterraneo</span></em>), Barcelona, the capital of the Catalonia region of Spain, is one of the Iberian peninsula&rsquo;s top cities. A port of call, embarkation/disembarkation port on Mediterranean cruises, and beginning or ending point of many Trans-Atlantic repositioning cruises to and from Fort Lauderdale and other U.S. ports, Barcelona came into the spotlight during the 1992 Olympics that it hosted. It has much to offer cruise passengers.

  9. Cruise line cabanas add more privacy to private islands

Cruise lines' private islands, with their aquamarine lagoons, barbecue lunch, live entertainment and activities, usually figure as passengers' favorite port of call on guest feedback forms. Recently, the cruise lines have been adding a greater dimension of privacy to their private islands with the introduction of cabanas that are available for rental during the port day. The cabanas can come with a variety of amenities: from complimentary use of water toys to butler service, and probably best of all, provide a private space for "upscale Robinson Crusoe" fantasies.

  11. What sets a cruise ship apart? Unique spaces

"Make your memory your travel bag," Russian novelist Alexander Solshenitzen once recommended. And making memories at sea is easy, particularly on ships that feature special spaces where passengers can not only enjoy the ambiance, but can actually also do something memorable there. It might be a place where passengers can take a cooking class on dishes of countries they are sailing to, a restaurant where they can prepare their own meal, a water coaster that propels them over the ocean, or simply a garden where they can stop to smell the flowers.

  13. For look at modern wonder: Panama Canal cruises in spring

Often dubbed the "Eighth Wonder Of The World" and selected as one of the "Seven Wonders Of The Modern World," the Panama Canal is a 48-mile long waterway across the Isthmus of Panama linking the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean. Completed in 1914 by the United States (the U.S. kept control of it and the Panama Canal Zone until 2000), the creation of the canal saved ships going from the Atlantic to the Pacific some 8,000 miles as well as the treacherous journey to traverse the often-rough waters of the Drake Passage and Cape Horn.

  17. Cruise Homeport spotlight: Port of Tampa

Located within 500 miles of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and Western Caribbean islands, the Port of Tampa is an ideal departure point for seven-day or shorter cruises to Cozumel, Costa Maya, Roatan, Belize City, Grand Cayman and other Western Caribbean ports of call. Holland America Line has sailed out of Tampa for three decades, most recently with the Ryndam; Carnival Cruise Lines has two ships deployed in Tampa, the Carnival Legend and the Carnival Inspiration and in the fall of 2011 the line will have the Carnival Paradise and the Carnival Legend sailing out of Tampa; and also coming to Tampa in fall of 2011 are the Norwegian Star and Royal Caribbean International's Jewel of the Seas. The Port of Tampa covers 5,000 acres and offers three cruise terminals.
