1. Cruise ships feature a variety of dining options

Variety is definitely the spice of life aboard today’s cruise ships (a far cry from the dining situation in the 1970s when Jeraldine Saunders wrote her book, The Love Boats, and the subsequent movies and television series The Love Boat based upon her work came along and were credited with popularizing cruising). Back then, there was typically only one restaurant for dinner onboard –bored or not, take it or leave it!). Now ships have multiple restaurants offering different menus and ambiance to suit different moods and tastes. Here are dining offerings on four ships, in four categories (moderate, premium, upper-premium and ultra-luxury) that feature at least half dozen eateries onboard (and in one case, two dozen) so if passengers so wish, they can dine at a different venue every evening of a seven-night cruise (with one of the nights being room service dinner –24-hour room service is available on all these ships on a complimentary basis).

  3. No need to get decked-out for cruise line dress codes

What is your preference at sea: glamorous and elegant or informal and casual? No matter what your taste in dinner attire, nowadays there is a cruise for you. Decades ago, passengers on many cruise lines needed to don tuxedoes and formal gowns for dinner on multiple occasions while on a cruise vacation. They can still do so today on some very glamorous ships, but the modern trend towards more casual lifestyles has also hit the high seas with some lines designating resort/cruise wear dress codes every evening of a voyage and others reducing the number of formal nights on their daily programs.

  19. Cruise line cabanas add more privacy to private islands

Cruise lines' private islands, with their aquamarine lagoons, barbecue lunch, live entertainment and activities, usually figure as passengers' favorite port of call on guest feedback forms. Recently, the cruise lines have been adding a greater dimension of privacy to their private islands with the introduction of cabanas that are available for rental during the port day. The cabanas can come with a variety of amenities: from complimentary use of water toys to butler service, and probably best of all, provide a private space for "upscale Robinson Crusoe" fantasies.
